The Rea Trophy, which dates back to the first Derby held in 1935, is con- sidered one of the crown jewels in the world of competitive billfishing. Lifetime club member Mike Simko of North Palm Beach was the second place angler overall with 8 releases aboard the Kite Keeper. Simko and team Kite Keeper also earned the title of Top Tag Team (on time) in this year's event, with 6 sailfish tagged & released. Mark Wodlinger, also a club life mem- ber, earned the third place overall angler trophy with 7 releases on time aboard the Good Call. Club member Susan McCart of Sarasota posted 5 releases to successfully defend her Top Lady Angler title winning the award a second year in a row. The award is presented in memory of the late Rosemarie Hampp who was an accomplished Derby angler in the 1950’s. Tournament spectators crowded the Sailfish Marina dock the final day as word spread about a big fish caught by one of the Derby teams. Angler Scott Robins of Miami Beach, fishing aboard the team Weez In The Keys captained by Chris Zielinski, landed a large yellowfin tuna earlier in the day. Scott’s big tuna weighed in at 138.8 pounds shattering the existing Silver Sailfish Derby weight fish record (previously a 59.3 pound wahoo caught by Mike Weber aboard Petunia in 2012). “I’ve had the opportunity Scott Robins's 138.8 pound yellowfin tuna set a new Derby weight fish record. Capt. Greg Bogdan (l) & Rea Trophy winner Alex de Latour to fish in a lot of places around the world and have had some pretty memorable catches, but this is without question one of my top five highlights,” said Robins who fought the fish for an hour and a half on twenty-pound class tackle. The spectacular catch earned Robin’s the Grand Champion Weight Fish Award and the Derby’s Louis S. Boski Trophy for the Most Outstanding Catch.
