Bob Kleiser started Bob Kleiser’s Sport Shop in 1934 and ran it until he passed away in 1978.  Dan Kleiser continued to run the shop until 1997. “My father thrived on personalized service and this note is a great example of it. The note is a wonderful piece of family history,” said Kleiser. A gentleman by the name of Roger Johnson from Jacksonville, Florida, discovered the note tucked inside an old reel box. He eventually tracked down Dan Kleiser to give it to him. “Dad ended up stationed in Hawaii as a Chief Gunners Mate. One of his duties was running a trap and skeet range designed to help teach bomber gunners how to properly lead their targets. I can remember him telling stories about pheasant hunting with Navy brass while stationed in Hawaii. You’d think he’d have more important things to do before heading out the door to enlist. This note really captures Dad’s personal touch. It’s no wonder he had such a loyal following,” added Kleiser. Thanks for sharing Dan! Old Bob Kleiser Note Found Margaret Murray of West Palm Beach has donated the Henry Chanin Trophy from the 1953 Silver Sailfish Derby to the Fishing Club. The 61-year- old trophy is a wonderfully engraved silver bowl featuring a sailfish relief. The trophy was awarded to the Derby angler who scored the most sailfish points based upon a length and weight formula. WPBFC member Henry Chanin of Palm Beach and Atlanta, Georgia, sponsored the award. Chanin was an accomplished angler who won the Derby’s prestigious Rea Trophy on two separate occasions, 1946 and 1950. In 1954, the Chanin trophy was transformed into the Top Lady Angler award in the Silver Sailfish Derby. “I bought the trophy at a local yard sale about 30 years ago because I collect things with fish on them and thought this piece looked really neat. It was very tarnished when I found it,” said Murray. Curiously the award does not have the winner’s name en- graved on it. “I called the Fishing Club years ago and spoke to Frances Doucet to try to find out who won the award. Frances said back then that it was the re- sponsibility of the winner to get their name engraved on the trophy. Apparently the winner never did. I’m just glad it’s been returned to the Fishing Club where others can enjoy seeing it,” said Murray. Frank Ardine & Rose Hampp (pictured left), with the 1957 Derby's Ladies Sailfish Release trophy The WPBFC was recently contacted by the family of Rose Hampp, the winner of the 1957 Silver Sailfish Derby's Ladies Sailfish Release Trophy. The family inquired about and has since agreed to sponsor the modern day version of this prestigious Derby award. "My grandmother loved to fish and we thought this was a fitting tribute to her. We are honored to be involved," said Rosemarie Hampp of Plainfield, New Jersey.
